Myofascial release

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a massage technique that releases the adhesions between fascia, muscle, bones, and skin.

During myofascial release, chiropractors apply gentle sustained pressure into areas of myofascial connective tissue restriction to eliminate pain and restore motion.

Benefits of myofascial release:

  • Eliminates pain and restores motion to affected areas
  • Treats traumatized, injured or recovering areas that may be pain causing, but do not show up in typical imaging studies such as X-Ray and MRI
  • Elongates and stretches fascia, the thin sheath of fibrous tissue enclosing a muscle
  • Mobilizes adhesive tissues to improve healing

How does myofascial release work?

Myofascial release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique, in which highly trained sports chiropractors gently massage and apply sustained pressure to an injured area. Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create myofascial restrictions that can produce extreme tensile pressures on pain sensitive structures that do not show up in typical imaging studies such as X-Ray and MRI. Myofascial release affects change in the fascial structures by stretching and elongating fascia, as well as mobilizing adhesive tissues.

While myofascial release is similar to Active Release Technique, there are several important distinctions. Some conditions respond better to one or the other. For this reason, the chiropractic sports physicians at Premier Sports & Spine have received training in both techniques and conduct a thorough history and exam to decide which technique or combination of techniques will work best for each patient.

Many conditions benefit from myofascial release. Pain usually occurs because of unwanted adhesions between tissues due to postural stress, inflammation, injury, or lack of full active range of motion.
