What is Osgood Schlatter Disease?
Osgood Schlatter Disease is an irritation at the insertion of the patellar tendon on the tibia (shin bone). The technical term for Osgood Schlatter Disease is an apophysitis which is inflammation in a growth center in immature bone. Osgood Schlatter is when the patellar tendon pulls at the attachment site on the tibia and causes inflammation of the growth center or Apophysis. This apophysitis ends up looking like a large bump just below your patellar tendon at the lower end of your knee and is very tender to the touch. The name of this condition is misleading as it is not, in fact, a disease, rather it is a condition involving inflammation in adolescence. Often times Osgood Schlatter’s gets confused with patellar tendinitis or general knee pain, which is why proper diagnosis is very important.
Typically, Sports Chiropractors see Osgood Schlatter’s affecting younger children in the middle of a growth spurt who play sports involving running and jumping. This is because long bones grow faster than the soft tissues causing a lot of tension through the thigh, over the patella and inserting into the apophysis under the kneecap. Most commonly seen in kids ages 13 to 18, Osgood Schlatter’s can resolve on its own when it’s bilateral, once the growth spurt is done and the soft tissue growth catches up to the rate of the long bone growth. When an adolescent athlete has Osgood Schlatter’s on only one side, that is when a sports chiropractor can really be helpful. This type of Osgood Schlatter’s may be caused by a growth spurt, but then does not resolve because the condition is irritated by faulty biomechanics, movement strategies and weakness or asymmetries. The sports chiropractors at Premier Sports and Spine Center take the time to look at the movement patterns in the lower kinetic chain for proper diagnosis and treatment for Osgood Schlatter’s, this is one of the most common adolescent sports injuries seen in both our Eden Prairie and Eagan clinic locations.
Treatment Options for Osgood Schlatter’s
Generally speaking, activity is recommended to the tolerance of the adolescent athlete. True Osgood Schlatter’s that is not related to altered movement strategies is a self-limiting condition and won’t create any larger long-term injury. The sports chiropractors at Premier Sports and Spine Center can offer a quicker and safe return to the sport by understanding the root cause of the condition and using our innovative combination of manual therapies to offer full resolution of symptoms. The treatment provided can help reduce the pain in a fraction of the amount of time as compared to rest alone.
