Bulging disc
Bulging discs are very common and are often present without causing symptoms.
A bulging disc can cause a wide variety of symptoms differing degrees of severity.
Though bulging discs can get smaller over time, there is no therapy that will “put the disc back in place.”
Herniated discs are more severe than bulging discs and occur when the center of the disc escapes the disc entirely, referred to as a rupture.
Symptoms of herniated or bulging discs may include:
- Lower back pain
- Neck pain
- Arm pain
- Pinched nerve
- Leg pain/sciatica
- Numbness/tingling
Treatments for bulging or herniated discs may include:

What is a bulging disc?
A spinal disc is actually a cartilage segment between each vertebrae in your spine, which acts as a cushion or shock absorber. Over time, a weak spot can form in the outer casing of the disc that can cause it to bulge. This bulge can mechanically cause problems and pain by pressing on a nerve or by putting pressure on a nerve.
As with any injury, the evaluation process is very important to determine what exactly is causing your neck or back pain. At Premier Sports & Spine, our sports chiropractic physicians will check the corresponding nerves to ensure there is no additional injury present.
After determining the cause of the pain, a treatment strategy will be created while educating the patient on what they need and what their options are. This treatment strategy will not be aimed at “putting the disc back.” The treatment will be designed to get you out of pain and give you the tools to stay that way.
How are herniated discs treated?
Some patients who are suffering from a herniated disc require nothing more than lower back pain relief such as soft tissue therapy or dry needling/acupuncture. Other patients will need comprehensive home exercise programs to help take pressure off the affected disc.
At Premier Sports & Spine, our chiropractors will assess the severity of your condition and the most effective treatment for your condition and lifestyle.
