Frequently Asked Questions
When should I see a chiropractor?
You should seek care from the sports chiropractic physicians at Premier Sports and Spine Center when pain, discomfort, or stiffness begins to disrupt your life. People often feel that they can manage their pain or just not think about it and many conditions may be able to be addressed at home, however, waiting to seek a professional opinion can sometimes make the problem worse. This can result in more difficulty resolving the problem. When you seek care early in a problem it often takes a shorter period of time to resolve. The highly ethical physicians at PSSC will not keep you in a treatment plan longer than you need to be and will give you the tools to prevent the problem from coming back.
Why does my back hurt after running?
There can be many different causes of back pain related to running. Running is a highly repetitive activity and so over the course of a long distance it can put a lot of physical stress on the body. This stress is conveyed up the legs and through the hips into the low back because the hips and low back are very connected, both by joints and muscles. If a person has a biomechanical inefficiency due to a muscle weakness or other causes, this stress can be put on one structure more than others and this results in more damage to that structure. This can result in back pain, hip pain, or pain in other areas. The sports chiropractic physicians at PSSC are trained and experienced in identifying these biomechanical inefficiencies as well as identifying the structures that are causing your pain. The techniques they specialize in can then be utilized to reduce your pain. After the pain has subsided, rehabilitation can be used to prevent the pain from coming back.
Does going to the chiropractor hurt?
Chiropractic manipulation is usually not painful but can occasionally result in some minor discomfort. The soft tissue therapies utilized at PSSC can be painful, similar to a deep tissue massage, but it is important to realize that all of the therapies are done to the patientʼs tolerance level. During therapy your doctor will ask you about pressure and how the treatment is feeling, patients are encouraged to let their doctor know if they would like them to use less pressure.
How often should I see a chiropractor?
The answer to this question is different for every case. At the time of your first visit at PSSC your chiropractic sports physician will perform a thorough exam to determine the cause of your pain. At this point they will discuss a treatment plan with you. At PSSC you will never be pressured into a long term treatment plan and the length of your treatment plan will be determined by your recovery. As your symptoms begin to subside, your treatment frequency will decrease and you will be given a more in-depth home program to help prevent the symptoms from returning. Once your symptoms are no longer present you will be released from care. Occasionally, patients choose to come in to the clinic for maintenance type care if they have a more chronic or permanent condition. This is entirely up to the patient and you will not be pressured to do so.
What type of injuries does PSSC treat?
The sports chiropractic physicians at PSSC treat a wide variety of injuries including low back pain, neck pain, tendinitis/tendinosis, sprain/strain, and plantar fasciitis. PSSC is able to treat many different injuries because the physicians are trained in a wide variety of treatment options which allows them to tailor a treatment strategy to your unique injury. PSSC has treated athletes from middle school, high school, college, and even professionals but the therapies they utilize are just as effective for patients who get most of their activity gardening or even just have pain from sitting at a desk all day.
Why should I come to PSSC instead of a different chiropractor?
Patients choose PSSC because of the advanced training the doctors have undergone and also because of the more in-depth treatment options they provide. All of the doctors at PSSC have taken post-doctoral training in sports medicine, soft tissue therapies, rehabilitation, and diagnostics. PSSC utilizes this extra training to perform a thorough history and exam to identify the cause of your pain. They then utilize some or all of a variety of treatment options to better treat your injury. This consists of 30-45 minutes of therapy, much of which will be soft tissue therapy for the muscles, tendons, and ligaments involved in your injury. At PSSC all of the care is provided by your physician and you will never be rushed in and out of the clinic after being “cracked.” This treatment approach gets people out of pain and back to their activity faster and more permanently. It is this unique atmosphere that causes area physical therapists, orthopedic specialists, and even other chiropractors to refer their patients to Premier Sports and Spine Center.
