osgood-schlatter disease
Osgood-Schlatter disease is an irritation of the growth center at the insertion of the patellar tendon on the tibia (shin bone).
This apophysitis can end up looking like a large bump just below your patellar tendon at the lower end of your knee and can be very tender to the touch.

What is Osgood-Schlatter disease?
The technical term for Osgood-Schlatter disease is an apophysitis, which is inflammation in a growth center in immature bone. Osgood-Schlatter is when the patellar tendon pulls at the attachment site on the tibia and causes inflammation of the growth center or apophysis.
The name of this condition is misleading as it is not, in fact, a disease, rather it is a condition involving inflammation, most common in adolescents. Osgood-Schlatter is often confused with patellar tendinitis or general knee pain, which is why proper diagnosis is very important.
Typically, the sports chiropractors at Premier see Osgood-Schlatter affecting children and teenagers in the middle of a growth spurt who play sports involving running and jumping. Long bones grow faster than the soft tissues, causing tension through the thigh, over the patella and inserting into the apophysis under the kneecap. When Osgood-Schlatter is unilateral, or only on one side, there typically is a biomechanical reason for the condition.
How is Osgood-Schlatter Disease resolved?
The sports chiropractors at Premier Sports & Spine address the movement patterns in the lower kinetic chain for proper diagnosis and treatment for Osgood-Schlatter.
Bilateral Osgood-Schlatter can resolve on its own once the growth spurt is done and the soft tissue growth catches up to the rate of the long bone growth. When an adolescent athlete has Osgood-Schlatter in only one knee, it is often from faulty biomechanics, abnormal firing patterns, weakness or asymmetries and they should seek treatment.
Can I keep playing sports if I have Osgood-Schlatter?
In general, sports and activity can continue as long as the adolescent athlete is able to tolerate any associated discomfort. True Osgood-Schlatter is a self-limiting condition and won’t create any larger long-term injury.
Premier’s sports chiropractors can treat the root cause of the condition, applying an innovative combination of manual therapies to decrease pain and for full resolution of symptoms. The treatment provided can reduce the pain in a fraction of the amount of time as compared to rest alone.
