What is Transverse
Transverse Friction Massage, also known as Cross Friction Massage, is a deep tissue massage technique that is performed at the site of an injury in order to breakdown scar tissue and remodel the tissue to become more flexible, pliable, and functional, like normal, healthy soft tissue.

How does Transverse Friction Massage work?
Transverse Friction Massage breaks down the scar tissue that naturally forms when tissue is damaged, either by an acute injury or by repetitive micro-trauma. This is accomplished by combining tissue breakdown with muscle lengthening procedures, such as ART, and with specific rehabilitation exercises. This combination allows the tissue to heal with a greater percentage of normal tissue and in a more functional way. Any scar tissue that does form is laid down in the plane of stress, making it more functional and flexible. In addition, this tissue breakdown allows the tissue to heal.
Studies have shown that the application of Transverse Friction Massage leads to immediate pain relief and a reduction in long term chronic pain. This is most likely due to fact that the patient experiences a numbing effect during the friction and reassessment after treatment shows an increase in strength and mobility. This technique is valuable in treating muscle, tendon, and ligamentous injuries in both acute and chronic conditions.
Numerous research studies have been performed to investigate why Transverse Friction Massage is so effective to provide pain relief for various injuries and conditions, including lower back pain relief. This research has shown that Transverse Friction Massage directly affects the manner in which tissue heals. When an injury occurs it is healed by the formation of scar tissue, this scar tissue covers the damage in all different directions and therefore is not very flexible or functional.
At Premier, all treatment involving Transverse Friction Massage is performed by a sports chiropractic physician who has advanced training in the deep massage technique, allowing for patients to progress faster and with fewer treatments.
