Sprains and Strains
what are sprains and strains?
Sprains and strains are two very common injuries that are treated by the sports chiropractors at both our Eden Prairie and Eagan locations. Sprains and strains are injuries that are usually associated with quick athletic movements or lifting heavy objects. The injury comes on suddenly and is often acutely painful. A strain is an injury sustained by a muscle or tendon that involves damage to the collagen fibers frequently caused by quickly over-stretching the muscle. A sprain is an injury sustained by a ligament that, similar to a strain, involves over-stretching or tearing of the ligament.
The most common strains include:
Some of the most common sprains include:
- Ankle Sprains
- Lower Back Sprains
- Neck Sprains (Whiplash)
- Knee Sprains (MCL, ACL, etc)
- Wrist Sprains
Due to the fact that sprains and strains involve different structures, the treatment strategy for each will differ. In sports medicine, decreasing activity levels due to sprain and strains may not always be possible as athletes often need to return to play sooner than later. The sports chiropractors at Premier Sports and Spine Center are very experienced in aiding their patients to return to play much faster using a combination of manual therapies to speed the healing process. Certain forms of taping, such as Kinesio taping or other more sturdy kinds of taping, may aid the patient in being able to participate sooner after a sprain/strain injury. Many of the techniques that the sports physicians at Premier Sports and Spine Center specialize in can aid in speeding up the recovery after these injuries. Left untreated, sprains and strains can turn into chronic conditions with complex compensation patterns. Treatment may include:
