Do chiropractors treat herniated discs?
The sports chiropractors at both our Eden Prairie and Eagan clinics treat herniated discs. The necessary treatment can vary widely depending on the severity of the patient’s symptoms. As with any condition, our sports chiropractors will perform a very thorough examination on any patient with a suspected disc herniation. A herniated disc can occur in the neck, low back, or mid-back, so checking the patient’s corresponding nerves to make sure they are working appropriately is very important. After an examination, if our chiropractor decides the best course of action is imaging or a second opinion, there is no hesitation on our part to pursue that next step.
What is a herniated disc?
The spinal discs are made up of cartilage segments between each bone in your spine that act as cushions or shock absorbers. If a weak spot develops in the outer cartilage of the disc, it can bulge out and occasionally that weak spot will rupture allowing the softer cartilage inside to escape the disc. This is known as a herniation. Severity can vary widely in a disc herniation from very few symptoms all the way to debilitating nerve pain that warrants surgery right away. Some disc herniations cause nothing more than a low back ache, while some will cause pain down the arm or leg. This wide variety is one of the reasons the sports chiropractors at Premier Sports and Spine Center have been trained in so many different treatment approaches. Some patients who are suffering from a herniated disc require nothing more than lower back pain relief such as soft tissue therapy or dry needling/acupuncture. Other patients will need comprehensive home exercise programs to help take pressure off the affected disc.
