What is Cross Friction Massage?
Cross Friction Massage, also known as Transverse Friction Massage, is a deep tissue massage technique that is performed at the site of an injury. The purpose of the massage is to breakdown scar tissue and remodel the tissue into more flexible, pliable, and functional, healthy soft tissue that functions normally.
How does Cross Friction Massage work?
Scar tissue is the body’s response to an acute injury or repetitive microtrauma. At the site of injury, the body forms scar tissue that covers the damaged area which various layers of tissue which is laid down in all different directions and is unusually thick. Due to the shape and purpose of the scar tissue, patients experience reduced mobility and pain as the tissue is not very flexible or functional. The massage breaks down the scar tissue through consistent applied pressure and friction.
This scar tissue breakdown brings additional blood flow to the area and allows the affected area to heal in a more functional way.
The actual process of Cross Friction Massage is accomplished by combining tissue breakdown with muscle lengthening procedures, such as ART, and with specific rehabilitation exercises. This combination allows the tissue to heal with a greater percentage of normal tissue, and the scar tissue that does form is laid down in the plane of stress, making it more functional and flexible.
In almost every instance the application of Cross Friction Massage leads to immediate pain relief. During the process, the patient experiences a numbing effect from the friction and reassessment after treatment shows reduction in pain and increased strength and mobility. This technique is valuable in treating muscle, tendon, and ligamentous injuries in both acute and chronic conditions.
Numerous research studies have been performed to investigate why Cross Friction Massage is so effective in providing pain relief for various injuries and conditions. The research has shown that Cross Friction Massage directly affects the manner in which tissue heals thereby reducing pain caused by thickened, misshapen, inflexible tissue.
At Premier Sports and Spine Center, all Cross Friction Massage is performed by a board licensed sports chiropractic physician that has advanced training and certification in the deep massage technique, allowing for patients to progress faster with fewer treatments.
