What is

Arthritis?

Arthritis is a commonly treated condition by the sports chiropractors at both our Eden Prairie and Eagan facilities.  Arthritis is a non-specific term for describing joint pain or joint disease.  There are more than one hundred types that can affect all ages  and genders.  Some of the more common types include:

  • osteoarthritis
  • rheumatoid
  • psoriatic
  • gouty

The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis which is essentially degeneration and wear and tear of a joint.  As the cartilage inside a joint wears out, the joint can become swollen, stiff, and sore.  This is the most common type treated by the sports chiropractors at Premier Sports and Spine Center.  Osteoarthritis is common in the spine and is also known as degenerative joint disease.  It is also frequently found in the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles.

The degeneration of the cartilage can’t be reversed, but many of the therapies utilized by a sports chiropractor can help with the stiffness and pain.  These therapies may include:

Most other types of arthritis are either not appropriate for chiropractic treatment or need to be co-management by a medical doctor as they often require pharmaceutical intervention as well. The sports chiropractors at Premier Sports and Spine Center are skilled at assessing which type of arthritis is causing your pain when completing an examination. If they suspect you may have a something other than osteoarthritis, they will refer you to the appropriate type of doctor such as a rheumatologist. If co-management would be helpful they will discuss this with you.

If you are suffering from arthritis and want to schedule an appointment at our Eden Prairie or Eagan clinic locations, or to discuss your condition with a sports chiropractic physician, contact us or call 952-479-0043 today.
